Truth and Reconciliation

My Journey Towards Truth and Reconciliation

In the video "Our 7 Ojibway Teachings," the focus is on seven key values—respect, love, honesty, humility, wisdom, truth, and bravery—that are central to Ojibway culture and spirituality. These teachings are essential for understanding how reconciliation can be fostered, not just in education but also in all aspects of life. They are an invitation to move beyond mere tolerance of difference to embrace the interconnectedness of all people and the world. These values emphasize relationships: with oneself, with others, and with the land.

The following visual encapsulates the Seven Sacred Teachings, emphasizing their deep cultural and spiritual resonance:

This image represents the core of reconciliation by visually expressing the teachings central to Ojibway culture. Each animal is a symbolic guide for values that align directly with the themes of transformation, respect, and interconnectedness. The minimalist design underscores the simplicity yet profound significance of these teachings, reminding us of their importance in fostering humility and openness in educational and societal contexts. The plants seen in the background are representative of growth and transformation through living these teachings.

Respect and humility are perhaps the most important teachings for educators who wish to embrace reconciliation. To truly understand the impact of colonization and its continuing effects on Indigenous communities, I must approach the subject with humility—acknowledging that my own knowledge is limited and that the wisdom of Indigenous peoples must be honoured. This humility allows for openness to learning and for recognizing the ways in which my own education may have been shaped by colonial frameworks.

Who Am I?

Who Am I? Hi, my name is Karla Friesen. I grew up in Biggar, SK, before moving to the "big" city of Regina. Growing up, I enjoyed a variety of activities, including curling, football, dancing, and playing musical instruments. I have a deep love for travel and was fortunate to live in Bonn, Germany, for a year, exploring much of Europe and Asia along the way.      While it took me some time to discover my educational path, I’ve found my passion in teaching. I am excited to inspire and make a positive impact on my future students.
